YTD: 3-4
Units: -1.9
Plays:
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire over 94 million (-130)<2.6/2> WSEX
Walk the Line over 16.5 million (-160) <1.6/1> WSEX
I am debuting my first two unit play this year and what a better movie to do it with than Harry Potter.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - With a loyal fanbase that should flock to see the next adventure in the world of Harry Potter this was no-brainer. Granted, neither of the previous three Harry Potter movies grossed over 94 million on their opening weekends (Prisoner of Azkaban was close with 93.7), I think this one will finally reach those heights and maybe even 100 million depending on the spectrum of the audience. Besides Revenge of the Sith earlier this year which grossed 108.4 million on its opening weekend, the Goblet of Fire is seeing pre-sales that would rank as number two this year behind that behemoth. A lot of people may think the PG-13 rating will hurt Harry Potter but I think it could go either way. Parents may not take their younger kids because of the rating, but you may have high schoolers/college kids who thought the previous ones were for kids that may check this one out. Also, the Goblet of Fire has its numerous midnight showings (which sold well where I live) and IMAX theaters that should bode well for its box office receipts. I was tempted to go with the under earlier this week, but this is a movie that you let your money ride on the over and hope the fanbase turns out, which it will.
Walk the Line - I expected this line to be higher. With adults needing something to see besides Harry Potter and Chicken Little, this will be the movie that should meet their needs. Also, with the Oscar buzz that is sure to come, I expect elderly people also to attend as this is the part of the year where they start turning out to watch the potential nominees for best picture. This could one of those nominees. The movie is receiving favorable reviews so that will also help. Playing in almost 3,000 theaters, Walk the Line should debut with about 21 million.
